Why is the actual capacity less than advertised?

Different algorithms between computer systems and manufacturers, as well as reserved space and firmware taking up some of the capacity.

· Manufacturer Defines: 1KB = 1000 bytes, 1MB = 1,000,000 bytes, 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes.

· Computer Defines: 1KB = 1024 bytes, 1MB = 1,048,576 bytes (1024*1024), 1GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes (1024*1024*1024)

Example:

USB flash drive labeled 64GB (decimal):

Actual binary capacity = 64,000,000,000 ÷ 1,073,741,824 ≈ 59.6 GB

Therefore, it is normal for Windows to show a USB drive that is 90% of the advertised capacity.
